Chennai, July 13(BPNS)

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting the latter for a special allocation of 1 crore vaccine doses to the state.

In a letter forwarded to the Prime Minister on Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister requested Narendra Modi to correct the imbalances in vaccine allocation and added that the state was facing a heavy shortage of vaccine doses.

Stalin pointed out that the state of Tamil Nadu have not received vaccines according to the proportion of its population and added that the Ministry of Health and Family welfare had promised that vaccines would be allocated to states based on the proportion of the eligible population in the age group of 18 and 44.

The Chief Minister, in the letter, said that while Tamil Nadu was allocated 302 vaccines per thousand of the population, states like Gujarat, Karnataka, and Rajasthan received 533, 493 ad 446 vaccine doses respectively and added that this was gross injustice to the state of Tamil Nadu.

Stalin said that the state of Tamil Nadu has received only 29,18,110 doses of vaccines from the Government of India for people in the 18-44 age group category as of July 8th. . He said that the state received 1,30,08,440 doses of vaccine.

The Chief Minister also said that the vaccine shortage has made it very difficult for the state to move ahead with inoculation. He said that the state government’s efforts on awareness on vaccination were bearing fruit and people were queuing up in large numbers for getting the jab. Stalin said that while the people of the state were coming out of the vaccine hesitancy owing to the micro-level intervention by his government, the shortage of vaccines would take away the good work on the ground.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a special allocation of 1 crore vaccines to help the state vaccinate its population in the targeted period.
