Students of several colleges in many rural districts of Tamil Nadu are forcibly giving transfer certificates (TC) to students citing lack of online attendance. Most of the students were called and informed that their TC is ready and asked to collect.
Rajesh. K, a student who is in the second year in private art and science college at Erode has lodged a complaint with the District collector stating that the college principal had called him and asked him to leave the college by accepting the Transfer Committee( TC).
The student when contacted by BPNS said, “ I am a farm help to my parents and don’t have much time to attend classes online. Even if I am ready to attend classes, I am not getting a proper signal and this has created a problem with the College and the college authorities asked me to accept the TC and to leave the college.”
Rajesh said that he did not go to college due to the lack of proper orientation. The student who was pursuing a second-year Economics, BA course while speaking to IANS said, “ I am being told to leave the college as I was lacking attendance. “
Students of different colleges in Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Salem, Madurai, when contacted told BPNS that they were being targeted by private colleges stating that they were not having the required attendance to attend classes.
Another student at a college in Virudhunagar while speaking to BPNS on conditions of anonymity said, “ I told the college authorities that I don’t have a smartphone but the college authorities told me that it was none of their concern.”
Principal of a private college in Erode while speaking to BPNS said,” We don’t know what their exact issue is, and even after we ask them their issue they did not communicate to us. “
The College principal said that several students are skipping the classes and are of feel that they need not attend classes but can appear in examinations. The College authorities feel that some of the parents also make use of the leniency offered to the students in not attending the classes and taking students to fields and other hard manual labour during the time of the classes of these students.
In Salem also several students complained that they were being forced to accept the Transfer Certificate even though the students wanted to continue their education.
A student who was pursuing his second year BA in English literature while speaking BPNS said, “ The college principal is calling me again and again. He told me that I will have to accept the TC certificate and that continuing me in the class was difficult for the college. I am the first one in my family to attend a college and I want to somehow complete and pass the exam.”
Most of the students contacted by BPNS said that they want to complete their courses and to get a degree certificate and that they will not accept the Transfer Certificate.
