Chennai, March 24,2025

Tamil superstar turned politician and founder leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) will be contesting from a constituency in Ramanathapuram district in the 2026 assembly elections.

Even though polls are one year away, Vijay have commenced preparations for the polls and TVK have already conducted a series of surveys in many constituencies.

It may be noted that Vijay has been vocal among the fishermen community and has even addressed a public meeting at Nagapattinam against the regular arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. In the public meeting Vijay has lashed out against the state government of the DMK and the NDA government at the centre.

With Ramanathapuram being a coastal district and fishermen communities present in large numbers, the think tanks in the TVK have proposed one of the assembly constituencies in the district for Vijay to contest.

A senior leader of the TVK who does not want to be named told IANS that Vijay wants to be among the downtrodden people and to take up their cause as a politician and that it was natural for him to chose Ramanathapuram which is a coastal district and always in the news on the recurring arrests of Tamil fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy on charges of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

It may be noted that election stratgeist Prasanth Kishore is acting as an advisor to Vijay and has been actively present during the first anniversary celebrations of the TVK held recently at Kancheepuram district.

Vijay, it may be recalled is the most popular Tamil movie superstar who has plunged into politics after the iconic Tamil actor turned Chief Minister
of the state, M.G.Ramachandran (MGR).

The Tamil superstar officially launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on February 2, 2024, positioning it as a party against corruption and divisive politics.

While he chose not to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he has confirmed that TVK will participate in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

On August 22, 2024, Vijay unveiled TVK’s flag and flag song at the party’s headquarters in Panaiyur, Chennai.

This was followed by TVK’s first major political conference on October 27, 2024, in Vikravandi, Villupuram district, which witnessed an estimated three lakh attendees.

The overwhelming turnout caused severe traffic congestion on the Chennai-Tiruchi National Highway, forcing authorities to divert vehicles.

At the Vikravandi event, Vijay launched scathing attacks on both the DMK and BJP, branding the DMK as his political adversary and the BJP as his ideological adversary.

He accused the DMK of being a family-run party that manipulates the Dravidian identity for personal gain, while denouncing the BJP for its divisive politics.

Unsurprisingly, the DMK dismissed Vijay’s allegations, claiming that he was indirectly supporting the BJP.

DMK leaders referred to TVK as the “C team” of the saffron party, attempting to downplay its impact.

Despite such criticism, Vijay’s political influence has been steadily growing. His fan club-turned-political organisation, All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (AITVMI), made a strong mark in the 2021 Tamil Nadu local body elections, winning 115 out of the 169 seats it contested.

With Vijay now stepping up his political attacks, all eyes are on TVK’s general council meeting on March 28, where he is expected to outline plans his party’s electoral roadmap for 2026.
