Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K . Stalin has said that his government is taking climate change as a serious issue plaguing humanity. He was speaking at an international seminar organized by the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation(MSSRF) at Chennai on Friday.
Stalin said that the state was ready to initiate measures to tackle climate change and said that his government was receptive to the suggestions of environmentalists regarding climate change.
Chief Minister while addressing the international seminar on “Ensuring food and nutrition security in the context of climate change and the Covid -19 pandemic”, said that the evils of climate change are being felt by society on a day to day basis and said that administrators and policymakers have to take this issue up with seriousness.
Stalin said that since the past few years, monsoons are difficult to predict and that there were reports that some places in the world were reaching wet-bulb temperature. Chief Minister said that this means the human body would lose the ability to cool itself.
The Chief Minister said that the state government was committed to becoming self-sufficient in food production and for the increase in the spread of agricultural land. He also said that his government is taking measures to turn agriculture profitable to farmers.
He said that his government has announced a separate budget for farming and added that there was a special focus on organic farming. Stalin said that the government is committed to revitalizing farmer’s markets and forming village markets.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr. M.S. Swaminathan recollected the contributions made by the late Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, especially in the area of agriculture. The eminent agriculture scientist complimented Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on his efforts to make the state progressive in agriculture.
Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist World Health organization complimented the Chief Minister, M.K .Stalin on the latest initiative of the TN government, “Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam” , the initiative of the state government to take health care to the doorsteps.
She said that this initiative of the state government was an important step in ensuring Universal health coverage.
