Tamil Nadu police are on the trial of a drug syndicate that has its wings spread globally after 1 crore worth of drugs were seized from Chennai on Wednesday.
According to the police the drug gang members who were arrested on Wednesday has, during interrogation, revealed that the gang has tentacles spread in other foreign countries and that a well-organized network of drug pushers was behind the racket.
Police said that they had acted on a tip-off and nabbed S. Zahir Hussain from a shop at Mannadi, Triplicane, and seized 1kg of methamphetamine from his possession. On questioning by a police team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Veerakumar, Hussain revealed that he received the contraband from Mohammed Sultan of Washermenpet and V. Nasser of Triplicane.
The police team also arrested A. Junnath Ali, N. Azharuddin, and Nurul Amin from Washermenpet and Triplicane in connection with the drug seizure after Zahir Hussain spilled the beans during questioning.
The team also told police that they were only pushers and that an organized network with roots across the country was behind this. Police have also revealed that they have been sending drugs to Far Eastern countries and Australia Solon for the past two years.
The startling revelations of the drug predating gang have led to the police commence a detailed probe into the international network of drug peddlers.
A senior officer told BPNS that the investigation could be handled better if a central agency is handed over the investigation. He said that with inter-state gangs present in the drug pushing syndicate having international connections, the state police will not be able to handle the investigation that requires outside support including that of agencies like the Interpol.
