The Coimbatore police are to join hands with students who are studying Information Technology and specializing in Artificial Intelligence and ethical hacking for investigation of cyber crimes.

A senior officer with the Coimbatore city police told BPNS  that this was a move intended to seek advice from students who are having sound knowledge in handling cyber crimes and to get their support in preventing cyber crimes.

The Coimbatore police have also commenced a cyber crime awareness among the students, especially college students who are active in social media and other applications that are prone to cyber crimes.

A senior officer said, “ Students who are studying IT, software courses, and application development courses will have knowledge about cybercrimes and they will be able to advise police on how to identify those involved in cyber crimes.”

Police have a full-fledged cyber crime cell but senior officers feel that engaging bright young minds who are having sound knowledge of the latest trends in software and IT technologies would be an added advantage for the department.

The Coimbatore city police have also planned to establish a ‘Cyber Club’ that comprises two staff conveners and students of every college in the city. These ‘Cyber Clubs’ will be used to create cyber awareness among students and common people and how to stay away from modern cyber crimes involving financial misappropriation, misuse of photographs, morphed photos, and spurious calls like payment of online bills and thereby swindling money from bank accounts.

Tamil Nadu state police cybercrime is monitoring the initiative of the Coimbatore city police and if the association with the students is found to be helpful, then the project is planned to be executed across the state.

A senior officer with the Tamil Nadu cyber cell while speaking to BPNS said, “ After monitoring the project of Coimbatore city police, and if the students we engage are delivering proper results, we are planning this to be extended across the state.”

The department is also planning to open ‘Cyber Clubs’ in all colleges across the state to create awareness among students on the cyber crimes involved.
