A woman police head constable, Kavitha serving the Tamil Nadu police was crushed to death on Tuesday morning while she was on duty outside the Secretariat in Chennai. A male head constable escaped with minor injuries.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister condoled the passing away of the woman head constable and announced a relief of Rs 10 lakh to her family.

Police said that the huge tree was uprooted at 9.15 am on Tuesday and Kavitha was crushed to death under it. Half a dozen police personal who were on duty managed to escape from the scene while one male head constable Murugan suffered minor injuries.

Kavitha is survived by her husband who works with the Southern Railway and the family stays at the Tondiarpet railway quarters. She has three children with the elder one in college while the other two in school.

Police said that due to incessant rains, the secretariat was deserted and generally more than 100 people would have been present to submit grievances.
