Chennai airport partially closed as incoming flights stopped till 6 pm, flights diverted

The Airport Authority of India has suspended operations of flights arriving in Chennai has been stopped f till 6 pm. However, departure will function as usual. This was stated by the Chennai airport director, Dr. Sharad Kumar and in a statement, he said that the decision was taken for the safety of the passengers.

The Airport director also said that a decision on whether the aircraft should be allowed to land will be taken after 5 pm.

Eleven flights that had to arrive from various destinations like Delhi, Bangaluru, Kolkotta, Tiruchi, and Madurai have been diverted either to Bangaluru or to Hyderabad. This is due to the fact that flights have difficulty in landing due to heavy winds.

Airport Authority of India sources told IANS that 13 flights have already been diverted.

444 neighbourhoods in Chennai have been flooded and a total of 11817 complaints have been received at the Chennai corporation helpline number 1913 and civic issues of 5913 complaints have been resolved, a statement from the Greater Chennai Corporation said.

Corporation has already distributed 2.9 lakh food packets to the residents. Woodcutting machines are used to remove several uprooted trees in Chennai corporation areas. GCC said that more than 160 trees were uprooted.
