Chennai, April 26 (BPNS)

AIADMK Chief coordinator and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, O. Panneerselvam (OPS) have demanded a CBI probe into the alleged custodial death of a youth at the Secretariat Colony Police Station last week.

The youth, V. Vignesh (25), and his friend Suresh were arrested by the Secretariat Colony police on April 18 on charges of processing Ganja and later Vignesh was found dead in police custody. The family of Vignesh and opposition political parties have alleged that he was brutally tortured at the Secretariat Colony police station and that he died due to the police’s highhandedness. The family has demanded a CBI inquiry into the issue.

OPS in a statement on Tuesday said that even though the case was handed over to the Crime Branch- CID, the family of the deceased youth is not fully satisfied. He said that the family had met him and complained that they may not get justice for Vignesh as the CB-CID which is now investigating the case was also under the state home department which was controlling the state police.

The former Chief Minister also demanded a solatium of  Rs 50 lakh to the family of Vignesh and a government job for one of his family members.

In a related development, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K Stalin announced a solatium of Rs 10 lakh to the family of Vignesh and free medical treatment for Suresh. This was announced by the Chief Minister during his address to the state assembly on Tuesday.

Stalin said that the DMK whether in power or not has always demanded a thorough probe into the custodial deaths and appropriate action be taken against the erring police officers.
