Chennai, June 19 (BPNS)

A Tamil Nadu man has bought a car worth Rs 6 lakh using 10 rupee coins. 60, 000 coins were used for this.

The man identified as Vetrivel told media persons that his mother was running a small shop in his hometown and people were not accepting 10 Rs coins. He said that this led to a heap of 10 rs coins at his home. He said that other than people not accepting coins, he had seen children playing with Rs 10 coins as if they were worthless and wanted to create an awareness in the society on its value and hence collected the coins and purchased the car.

While speaking to media persons, Vetrivel said, “ My mother is having a shop at Arur in Dharmapuri district.  No one is willing to accept the Rs 10 coin and even banks were reluctant to accept this and they claim that they don’t have the facility to count the coins.”

He said that the Reserve Bank of India has never said that these coins are worthless and asked why the banks were not accepting the coins.

Vetrivel said that the car dealership was not willing to accept the 10 rs coins but later agreed on seeing his determination and he carried the coins in sacks, money was counted and the keys were handed over to him.
