Chennai police on noise pollution awareness on 100 city roads

The Greater Chennai police will be creating noise pollution awareness on 100 city roads as part of the ‘No Honking awareness drive’. The Chennai police are using the services of school students and celebrities. Skits will be used to drive the message among the public about noise pollution.

Awareness programmes will be conducted on FM channels. 50,000 e-signatures for anti- honking pledge will be collected and a giant balloon with no honking pledge will be displayed at the Chennai city police commissioner’s office.

Chennai City police will rope in Road Safety Patrol volunteers to be part of the awareness programme. The awareness drive will focus on the ill effects of continuous and unnecessary honking.

The ‘ No Honking’ drive is observed from June 27 to July 3 in the Chennai City Police commission limits.

The police will conduct a detailed study on the noise levels and would buy specialized equipment to measure the noise levels. Fine will be imposed on the violators and to start with a fine ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 200 will be imposed on the motorists for honking.  This fine amount will be increased from Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 after the clearance from the state government.

Chennai City Police Commissioner, Shankar Jiwal while speaking to media persons said that a detailed and specific study will be conducted on the level of noise pollution during the week and then take a policy on further moves.
