Thiruvananthapuram, October 30 (BPNS)

The death of a 23-year-old youth in Parassala in Thiruvananthapuram turned out to be a murder. The homicide got revealed after the youth’s girlfriend, Greeshma is said to have confessed to the crime to the special investigation team (SIT). The SIT had questioned the girl for around eight hours and is said to have broken her defense. The deceased was Sharon Raj. It was on October 25 that Sharon breathed his last due to internal organ failure.

The SIT had solved the case within a day after taking over the investigation from the local police.

Briefing the media, ADGP (Law and Order) MR Ajithkumar said that Greeshma had given Sharon a Kashaya which was mixed with pesticide, when he visited her on October 14 at her house.

“Upon questioning her, we found that Greeshma and Sharon were in relationship and since February fissures had developed. Greeshma had tried to get rid of Sharon. And for the same, she tried several tricks. But Sharon was steadfast to continue the relationship. It was after this that Greeshma decided to kill her boyfriend,” said Ajithkumar.

According to the ADGP, Greeshma had invited Sharon to her house on October 14 with the intention to kill. It is said that Greeshma’s decision to get rid of Sharon from her way was because she got a better marriage proposal.

“It was a statement from the doctor who conducted the postmortem that grew our suspicion on Greeshma. The doctor had told us that the chances of poisoning and that too with pesticide will have to be suspected in the death of Sharon. We analyzed it. We also analyzed the two statements provided by Greeshma to the local police on October 26 and 27. They had some conflicts. We decided then to focus our attention on Greeshma,” said the ADGP.

According to police, Greeshma had given Sharon a Kashaya combination that was made at home. The pesticide which was mixed in that Kashaya was Kapiq Herbicide, which effectively controls broadleaved weeds and grasses.

At the same time, the police said that the details that had come out so far will have to be reexamined as they had connected the dots using Greeshma’s answers during the questioning.

“We had tried to find answers to four main questions from Greeshma: why she invited Sharon to her house, what things were given to Sharon other than the juice, why Kashaya was given to Sharon, and who was present when Sharon was there at the house,” said a police officer.

The officer also added that along with Greeshma, her parents and a close relative were summoned. They were questioned individually and in a group.

“We received preliminary postmortem findings. The statement from the forensic surgeon was also there. It is against this backdrop that we decided to thoroughly question Greeshma. Though she confessed, we suspect that she might have gotten help. Evidence collection is also crucial,” added the officer.

It is said that Greeshma had researched about slow poisoning via the internet. The police cited this as her intention to murder Sharon.

At the same time, the failure of the Parassala Police to consider the doubts about Sharon’s death has also come to the fore. It is said that the local police did not pay heed to Sharon’s family’s suspicion regarding the death. The family had told the local police that Sharon’s health had deteriorated after his visit to Greeshma’s house. But the victim’s family alleged that the local police didn’t try to investigate this angle resulting in the accused destroying evidence, if any.

Earlier, Greeshma pleaded innocence. She then told the media, “I am being portrayed as a killer and I don’t know what will happen to me as I am not able to withstand this torture. I will not kill a person whom I love a lot. Had it been needed I could have done it before.”
