TN police provide conditional permission to RSS route march

- October 31, 2022

Chennai, Oct 31 (BPNS)

Tamil Nadu police will provide conditional permission to the proposed route march of Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS)  on November 6 across the state.

The Tamil Nadu Director General of Police, C. Sylendrababu in a communique to District Superintendents of Police /Commissioners of Police said that the permission is granted taking into account the safety of the public, participants in the march, traffic scenario, and prevailing law and order situation in the area.

The Tamil Nadu police had earlier filed a petition to Madras High Court to review the permission it had granted to conduct the march on September 22. The petition of the police was based on the National Investigation Agency (NIA) raids and arrests of leaders of Popular Front of India (PFI) and subsequent ban on the organization.

The police had said that the situation was not conducive for conducting a march and subsequent public programme, given the communally sensitive nature in many parts of the state. The Madras High Court accepted the police report which had presented seven intelligence reports that indicated possible communal tension in the wake of raids at PFI centres. The Court then directed the police to grant permission for the route march on November 6, 2022.

It may be noted that the National Investigation Agency had conducted raids at several offices of the Islamist organization, Popular Front of India (PFI) on September 22, and subsequently, the organization was banned. Several senior leaders of PFI were arrested in Tamil Nadu and the intelligence agencies reported that communal tension is prevalent in the state.
