Shocker for AIADMK and EPS as party pushed to third place behind BJP in 7 seats, fourth in four seats

Chennai, June 4 (BPNS)

The principal opposition party of Tamil Nadu, AIADMK is relegated to the third place behind BJP in eleven seats of the state in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The party received a shocker as the AIADMK was pushed to fourth place in four seats of the state behind BJP and NTK. The party touched the fourth position in Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Vellore and Puducherry Union Territory.

The party reached a dismal third behind the BJP and NDA in Chennai South, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Madurai, Nilgiris, Ramanathapuram and Theni.

The AIADMK contested in 33 seats in Tamil Nadu out of the 39 seats and its allies DMDK and SDPI contested in five seats and in one seat respectively.

It may be recalled that the AIADMK ruled Tamil Nadu from 2011 to 2021 in a stretch and in the 2021 assembly elections the party won 66 seats with a vote share of 33.29 % votes.

The drubbing of the AIADMK is considered as a major personal defeat for the party general secretary and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS). It may be recalled that the party leadership under him expelled senior leader and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, O. Panneerselvam (OPS) who is highly popular in the southern regions of Tamil Nadu.

Other than this the AIADMK snapped ties with the BJP on September 25,2023 and this also led to a major erosion in opposition unity against the DMK.

While election results have yet to be formally announced and latest figures to be provided by the Election commission of India, the AIADMK will have lot of introspection to be done on the drubbing it faced in the polls.
