Chennai, July 19 (BPNS)
The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday transferred the Kallakurichi district collector and Superintendent of Police after the Sunday incident in which a mob took law and order into their hands and vandalized a private school.
Kallakurichi district collector, P.S. Sridhar, and District Superintendent of Police,P. Selvakumar was transferred. Sravan Kumar Jatavath who is presently the Additional Director of Agriculture, Government of Tamil Nadu replaces the district collector, and P. Pakalavan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Triplicane, Chennai will replace P. Selvakumar as the District Superintendent of Police.
A group of people had vandalized the school and torched several school buses and a few police vans during the violent protests on Sunday. The protest carried out over the alleged suicide of a Plus Two student turned violent on Sunday leading to wide-scale destruction of the school and torching of vehicles.
The opposition has termed the Kallakurichi incident as an example of the failure of the law and order situation of the state. The Madras High Court had come down heavily on the perpetrators of the violence and said that it was a meticulously planned and executed violence instead of a sporadic one and called upon the government to take stringent action against those who had planned the massive violence at Kallakurichi.
The transfer of two top officers of the district is a clear indicator that the government was cracking the whip on the incident.
In a related development, the second autopsy of the Plus two student who allegedly committed suicide has begun at the Kallakurichi district hospital after the Madras High Court directed a second postmortem following a petition filed by the deceased student’s father.
