Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin has called an all-party meeting on July 12 on the issue of the Mekedatu dam. The Tamil Nadu government had objected to Karnataka constructing a dam in the Cauvery river and the state Water resources minister S. Duraimurugan had met Union Jal Shakthi Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi and received an assurance from the minister that any construction will be done only with the consent of Tamil Nadu.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Tamil Nadu Chief minister’s office said that an all-party meeting is called on July 12 to resolve the crisis regarding the Mekedatu dam and that a legal remedy has to be found for the same.
The all party meeting, according to the Chief Minister’s office, will discuss and take a unified stand on the Mekedatu dam issue. The Tamil Nadu government said that Karnataka should abide by the Supreme Court orders that the Karnataka government cannot allow any block to the free flow of the Cauvery river which is the major source of water for the farmers living in the delta region.
Karnataka Chief Minister, Yeddyurappa had on Thursday called a meeting of senior officials of the state to speed up the construction of the Mekedatu dam.
