The Tamil Nadu government has reconstituted the State Vigilance and Monitoring Committee with the Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin as the Chairman.
In a statement on Friday, the Adi Dravidar and Tribal welfare department said that the committee with has State Minister for Finance, PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan, Minister for Adi- Dravidar Welfare, N. Kayalvizhi Selvaraj, Minister for Labour, C.V.Ganesan, and Minister for Tourism, M. Mathiventhan as members.
The committee will have two Members of Parliament( Rajya Sabha), N Chandrasegharan of the AIADMK and Anthiyur P Selvarasu of the DMK. 7 Members of Lok Sabha and 43 Members of Legislative Assembly are also included in the committee.
The committee, according to the statement would meet twice a year in January and June to review the implementation of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes(Prevention of Atrocities Act).
It may be noted that several Dalit rights activists have urged the Chief Minister, M.K.Stalin to ensure that the State level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee is constituted at the earliest and that the meetings are held under Rule 16 of the SC/ST(Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act 2015 within the stipulated time.
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi(VCK) leader and Member of Parliament from Villupuram constituency, D. Ravikumar that in 2020 he had sought details on the implementation of the SC/ST Acts in states and the status of State and district level vigilance commitees across India in Parliament.
