Chennai, Sept 19 (BPNS)
Former Chief Minister and Coordinator of Opposition AIADMK, O. Panneerselvam has called upon the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin to personally intervene in the release of life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
He urged Chief Minister Stalin to pressurise the central government through the good offices of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MP’s and to fulfill the poll promises of DMK that it would take effort to release the seven life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
The former Chief Minister asked whether the DMK had diluted the release of the seven life convicts like it had downplayed the NEET. He said that in a media interview, the state law minister S. Raghupathy has said that the state government had petitioned the President through the good offices of the former Governor of the state and that the government cannot put pressure on the new Governor.
OPS pointed out that M.K.Stalin as opposition leader had walked out of the state assembly on February 2, 2021, to register a strong protest against the then Governor Banwarilal Purohit and had criticized the then AIADMK government that was not putting ample pressure on the Central government for the release of the life convicts in the assassination case of the former Prime Minister.
The former Chief Minister also said that 124 days have passed since Stalin has written a letter to the President of the country on the issue and nothing has happened since then. He said that the undue delay was creating anguish among the people of the state and called upon the Chief Minister to immediately intervene in the matter.
