A 21-year student of first-year MA course at Presidency College, Chennai, M. Kumar ended his life by jumping before a double-decker train on Tuesday night after sending an audio message to his friends and family that he was unable to bear the insult of a rival student gang of another college.
Police said that there were regular clashes between rival college students during travel by train and bus and recently students of Presidency College, Chennai for pulling the chain to stop a moving train for cutting a birthday cake. This led to rail roko with students blocking the train services.
Kumar according to the police had sent an audio message to his family and friends citing that he was unable to bear the insult meted out by the students of Pachiyappa’s college, Chennai and that he did not want to live a life given as alms by the rival students. He apologized to his mother and friends and according to the Thiruninravur police officers, the audio clip ended with the rumblings of a train.
According to Police, he had returned home on Tuesday afternoon after attending classes and told his mother that he had to attend a wedding in the evening and left home and had informed that he would be late to home. His family and friends dismissed his audio clip as not serious and only when he did not return home till Wednesday morning they commenced a search and police identified the body on the railway track.
Thiruninravur police that is investigating the case said that Kumar jumped before the double-decker train from Bengaluru around 8.40 pm a few meters from the Thiruninravur railway station.
Some students of Pachiyappa’s college are detained by the police and are investigating the reason for Kumar’s death. Police said that Kumar had narrated the ordeal of being harassed by a gang of students but he had not further elaborated about which college students were behind this.
