Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin has said that no custodial death will happen in the future in the state. He was speaking at the state legislative assembly on Tuesday.
Stalin said that the accused in custody should not be tortured physically or mentally and assured safety of all in jails of the state. He said that custodial deaths cannot be justified irrespective of which political party was in power in the state.
The Chief minister’s assurance came after six policemen of Secretariat Colony police station in Chennai were arrested in the alleged custodial death of a Scheduled caste youth Vignesh. The youth along with another person, Suresh, was taken into custody on April 18th and he died on April 19th his autopsy report it was mentioned that there were 13 injuries in his body including a fracture in his right leg and several injuries on his face and head allegedly due to thrashing.
In another incident, a person, Thangamani (43) also died in Tiruvannamalai sub-jail on April 27th after being taken into custody on April 26th for illicit brewing of liquor. The family and friends of Thangamani have also alleged that the police had tortured him to death and an investigation is on.
