KOCHI: Malayalam superstar Mohanlal on Sunday said Kerala had placed immense expectations on Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and expressed confidence that the new government possessed the determination and strength needed to address the state’s growing challenges, including the rising drug menace.
Speaking at a civic reception organised for the Chief Minister in Kochi, Mohanlal described the public support behind Satheesan’s elevation as a rare moment in Kerala’s political history. He said it was unusual for an entire state to collectively desire one individual to assume the top political post.
Reflecting on Satheesan’s popularity, Mohanlal attributed it to qualities such as honesty and transparency, saying these traits had become evident through his public life and political journey. He said he hoped the Chief Minister would continue to uphold these values while leading the state.
Mohanlal also highlighted Kerala’s vast natural and cultural wealth, describing the state as one of the most beautiful regions in the world with its rivers, forests, mountains, seas and rich traditions. Recalling his travels across Kerala for professional commitments, he said he had often wondered whether the state had fully utilised its immense potential.
According to the actor, Kerala still had significant opportunities in areas such as culture, history, commerce, tourism and art. At the same time, he noted that such opportunities also created challenges for any administration.
Describing Satheesan as a thoughtful and widely read leader with Nehruvian socialist ideals, Mohanlal said the Chief Minister would have a broader perspective on these issues.
The actor also voiced concern over social issues including sanitation, road safety and the increasing impact of narcotics. Warning that drugs had reached even school surroundings, he said decisive action was necessary and expressed confidence that the present government could effectively combat the menace.
Mohanlal concluded by assuring his support to the government, saying he would contribute as an artist and citizen towards Kerala’s development.
