Thiruvananthapuram , June 22:
Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has directed the Police Welfare Bureau to provide immediate financial assistance to two police officers who sustained life-altering injuries while performing highway patrol duties in Kasaragod district.
According to an official statement issued by the State Police Media Centre, the government will release an initial assistance of ₹5 lakh each to the injured officers, who underwent amputations following a road accident during a vehicle inspection operation on the National Highway near Kanhangad.
The officers, identified as Sooraj (32) and Aloysius (39) of the Kanhangad Police Station, were on duty at Aingoth on Thursday when the accident occurred. They were carrying out routine vehicle checks and highway enforcement activities when they suffered severe injuries.
Both officers were initially admitted to a private hospital in Kanhangad before being shifted to a specialised medical facility in Mangaluru for advanced treatment. Due to the seriousness of their injuries, doctors were forced to amputate one officer’s leg below the knee, while the other officer lost a foot.
Reviewing their condition, Chennithala assured the officers and their families that the State government would extend all possible support. He also directed officials to ensure that the injured personnel receive the best available medical treatment and rehabilitation support.
“The police force stands firmly with officers who are injured while performing their duties. They will receive every possible assistance and the highest standard of care,” the Home Minister said.
In addition to the financial aid, Chennithala assured that both officers would be provided suitable postings after their recovery and when they are medically fit to return to service.
The incident has evoked concern and sympathy across the police force, with fellow officers and senior officials expressing solidarity with the injured personnel. The government’s intervention has been welcomed as a gesture of support for police personnel who risk their lives while carrying out public duties.
