Uyghur human rights activist and Campaign for Uyghurs Chairperson Rushan Abbas has been named the Women’s eNews Champion for Human Rights 2026, an honour she dedicated not to herself but to the Uyghur people and, in particular, to Uyghur women whose lives have been profoundly affected by repression in China’s Xinjiang region.
Accepting the award, Abbas described the recognition as a tribute to the courage, resilience and determination of Uyghur women who continue to struggle for freedom, justice and human dignity despite immense challenges. She said the honour belonged to those whose voices have been silenced and whose basic freedoms have been denied, emphasizing that the award shines a spotlight on a community that continues to face persecution and hardship.
In an emotional message, Abbas reflected on the plight of countless Uyghurs living under what she described as the oppressive policies of the Chinese Communist Party. She paid special tribute to her sister, Dr. Gulshan Abbas, who remains imprisoned in China. Abbas said her sister should have been standing beside her to celebrate the recognition but instead remains unjustly detained, symbolizing the suffering endured by many Uyghur families separated by political persecution.
The activist expressed gratitude to Women’s eNews for the honour and said she was humbled to be recognised alongside other global champions working to build a more just and equitable world. According to Abbas, the award serves as a powerful reminder that international solidarity remains essential in advancing human rights and defending vulnerable communities.
She also acknowledged the support of allies, advocates and members of Campaign for Uyghurs, the Washington-based organisation she leads, noting that their collective efforts have helped keep international attention focused on the plight of the Uyghur people.
While celebrating the recognition, Abbas stressed that the struggle for justice is far from over. She said the award reinforces her commitment to continue advocating for the rights, freedom and dignity of Uyghur women and all those affected by persecution. The recognition, she added, is a reminder that meaningful change becomes possible when people across the world stand together in defence of human rights.
