The 52-day trawling ban in the state will come into effect on Thursday. The ban will be from midnight of June 9 to July 31. The annual trawling ban, according to Marine Products Export Development Authority, is one of the management measures to regulate the fishery and the conservation of the marine resources which had created a substantial increase in fish production in the past few years. During the period only traditional boats are allowed to go fishing. Fisheries minister Saji Cheriyan said that the nine coastal districts were directed to ensure all arrangements during the trawl-ban period.
“Directions were given to the concerned for the free ration disbursal for fishers. It will be extended to those engaged in allied activities also,” said Saji.
He further added, “Discussions were held between district collectors, district police chiefs, coastal police, and marine enforcement personnel, fisheries and civil supplies officers, and others for the smooth functioning trawl-ban period. Fishing boats and crew from other states will be banned from entering the harbors and fish-landing centers of the state during the period.”
According to a fisheries official, it will be ensured that by the evening of June 9 all trawling boats had moved to safe locations. Those who defy the trawling ban will be dealt with strongly.
“To help the fishermen 24-hour control rooms were opened at nine coastal districts. Also during the ban period, one carrier boat will be allowed to accompany inboard engine-fitted boats. Also, the assistance of the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard during emergencies were ensured,” said the official.
It was in 1988 that the state first introduced trawling ban based on recommendations of the Balakrishnan Nair committee. The decision to extend the ban period from 45 to 52 days was taken in 2020 despite opposition from traditional fishing organizations like Swathanthra Matsya Thozhilali Federation and Matsya Thozhilali Aikya Vedi, which want a 90-day trawling ban in two phases – between June and July and then in October and November.
