Alappuzha, July 26:
Former CPI(M) leader, ex-Minister and Ambalappuzha MLA G. Sudhakaran on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the CPI(M) leadership and LDF councillors in Alappuzha, accusing them of orchestrating a political campaign against him and alleging that the police failed to act despite prior information about planned protests.
Speaking at a public function attended by Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, Sudhakaran claimed that certain LDF councillors in the Alappuzha municipality had been working to undermine him. He alleged that he had received advance information that protests would be staged against him at the municipal office, but the police failed to alert him or take preventive action.
Questioning the role of the police, Sudhakaran said the force, which functions under the Home Department, had a responsibility to protect elected representatives when credible intelligence about possible disturbances was available. He expressed disappointment that no steps were taken despite prior warnings.
The veteran leader also criticised what he described as an “understanding” between the CPI(M) and the Congress, urging the latter to end any such political arrangement. He alleged that such informal political ties encouraged corruption and weakened democratic opposition. His remarks gained significance as they were made in the presence of the Home Minister.
Responding to the criticism, Chennithala came out in support of Sudhakaran, saying that a senior public figure who had earned respect through decades of political service should not be subjected to repeated humiliation or black-flag protests. He urged the CPI(M) to refrain from targeting the former Minister and said the Congress would stand firmly by him.
Commenting on Sudhakaran’s allegation of political “deals” between parties, Chennithala said he had no knowledge of any such arrangement. The Home Minister also referred to the ongoing Exalogic case, stating that the investigation would continue strictly in accordance with the law. He expressed confidence that the truth would emerge as the probe progressed and that the public would eventually learn the facts surrounding the case.
