P. H. Kurien, a respected former government official and Founder Trustee of the Swasthi Foundation, has been remembered as a compassionate administrator, visionary social worker and tireless advocate of cancer prevention whose life touched countless people.
His passing has left a profound void in his family, among his colleagues and throughout the Swasthi Foundation. Yet those who worked alongside him believe that the mission he nurtured and the values he upheld will ensure that his legacy continues.
During his years in public service, Kurien held several important positions and discharged numerous responsibilities. His contributions to the administration of Kottayam and Idukki, as well as to Kerala’s wider governance system, are remembered with gratitude.
However, friends and associates said his greatest distinction was not any official position he held but his humanity. Within the corridors of power, he was a committed official. Among ordinary people, he was an approachable friend. To those in distress, he offered comfort and support, while his concern for society’s future marked him as a person of uncommon vision.
His approach to public service extended far beyond files, offices and official designations. The example he set could not be confined to a single document or institution, and his influence continued long after his retirement from government service.
Retirement did not lead Kurien to withdraw from public life. Instead, he dedicated himself to a larger social mission centred on disease prevention and community health. He firmly believed that society should not merely treat illnesses after they appeared but should work collectively to prevent them.
His commitment to the fight against cancer emerged from an understanding that the disease affected not only patients but entire families and communities. He worked to promote awareness, early detection and preventive healthcare, bringing together people and organisations committed to the cause.
At the Swasthi Foundation, Kurien was much more than a Founder Trustee. Colleagues regarded him as the organisation’s guiding spirit, its source of strength and the driving force behind its vision. He united many hands, encouraged new initiatives and gave wings to ideas intended to reduce suffering and save lives.
His absence will be deeply felt within the organisation. The empty chair he leaves behind represents more than the loss of a leader; it symbolises an immense emotional void for everyone who shared his journey.
For his family, the loss is immeasurable. He was a loving husband, a caring father and a source of affection and reassurance. His voice, smile and comforting presence cannot be replaced, and the grief created by his departure is beyond words.
Nevertheless, those associated with him have pledged to carry forward the responsibility he entrusted to them. They said the light he kindled in the field of cancer prevention would not be allowed to fade and that the journey he began would continue with renewed determination.
Every life saved through early detection, every family spared the anguish of losing a loved one and every preventable death averted would become a living testament to Kurien’s work.
Though a remarkable individual has departed, the mission he leaves behind remains alive. As long as that mission continues through the Swasthi Foundation and the many lives it touches, Kurien will remain present in people’s hearts, in every act of service and in every step taken in the fight against cancer.
He will be remembered not with a final farewell, but with a solemn promise: his dream will become a shared dream, his struggle a collective struggle and the light he kindled a lasting guide for those who follow.
With tearful eyes and grateful hearts, friends, family members and colleagues paid their respects to P. H. Kurien, saluting a life devoted to service, compassion and hope.
