Trinamool Congress rebel MP Saayoni Ghosh met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in Chennai on Tuesday, a meeting that drew attention amid political realignments in both Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
After the meeting, Ghosh praised Vijay’s vision for Tamil Nadu, saying it was centred on inclusive growth, opportunity and good governance. She said the Chief Minister had also spoken warmly about West Bengal and expressed admiration for its culture and traditions.
“It was a pleasure meeting the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru C. Joseph Vijay,” Ghosh said in a social media post, thanking him for his hospitality and extending her best wishes for his government.
An actor and singer who entered politics in 2021, Ghosh remains a Trinamool Congress MP, although she is now identified with a dissident faction within the party. She has neither announced her resignation from the Trinamool nor joined another political organisation.
Ghosh unsuccessfully contested the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election from Asansol South before being appointed president of the Trinamool Youth Congress. She later won the Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency in 2024 by more than 2.5 lakh votes. The party removed her from the youth wing post after she joined the rebel camp.
Her meeting with Vijay comes months after the Trinamool suffered a crushing defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election. The BJP won 207 seats in the 294-member House, while the Trinamool was reduced to 80.
Tamil Nadu also witnessed a change of government, with Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerging as the largest party on its electoral debut. The TVK won 108 of 234 seats, while the DMK’s tally fell from 133 to 59. The DMK-led alliance secured 73 seats.
The meeting has consequently fuelled speculation about Ghosh’s political course, though neither side announced any political understanding.
