Young Thug, Young Stoner Life, Gunna – Slime Language 2 ALBUM REVIEW

Slime Language 2 marks the return of Young Thugs’s rap collective; Young Stoner Life after Slime Language 1.  SL2 dropped on the 16th of April 2021 with 23 tracks. SL2 also has a big star-studded feature list with the likes of Drake, Kid Cudi, Lil Uzi Vert, Future, Lil Baby and Travis Scott.

This album has a hefty runtime of 1 hour and 15 minutes, with that much time the album has time and potential to deliver bangers but it unfortunately fails and produces a bloated and badly mixed array of tracks. SL2 also has a lot of badly written tracks like “Reckless” and “Take it to Trial”. Even with Thugger’s unique and exaggerated vocals most tracks simply just sound generic and boring, due to the cheaply produced beats and some underperforming YSL crewmembers.

Aside from the absolute horrible feature by Future on “Superstar” all of the features on SL2 are the bread and butter of this album, breathing life into the songs. Travis Scott’s late appearance at the end of “Diamonds Dancing” elevates an already high energy to track to the next level. On “Solid” Drake delivers a solid performance as always. Kid Cudi is the most interesting asset of the psychedelic track, “Moon Man”. The best feature on SL2 is arguably Lil Uzi Vert on “Proud of You”, a track which was first teased way back in 2018 through snippets and leaks now officially made its way into the tracklist of this album. The song is like a display of brotherhood between Uzi and Thugger. Other features like Lil baby, Skepta and even Nav do their part, albeit being nothing special.

In conclusion Slime Language 2 ends up being a bloated collaboration album with unknown artists of the YSL delivering poorly written hooks and some badly mixed tracks with a few bangers carried by Thug’s extraordinary vocals, Gunna’s smooth flow and catchy lyrics, few good beats and the features.

Best songs: Came and Saw, Proud of You, Diamonds Dancing, Solid and Moon Man.

Worst Songs: Reckless, Trance, Take it to Trial and I Like

Final Rating: 4/10
