Bypoll for Rajya Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu on September 13

The Election Commission of India will conduct election to one of the three vacancies in the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu on September 13. The polling will take place for the seat that fell vacant after the death of the AIADMK Member of the Rajya Sabha, A. Mohammedjan on March 23.

Election Commission of India (ECI) in a press release said that the last date for filing nominations will be August 31 and the nominations will be subjected to scrutiny on September 1.

The notification, according to the ECI press release will be issued on August 24. Polls will be conducted from 9 am to 4 pm on September 13 and counting will be held at 5 pm on the same day.

The DMK with its brute majority in the state assembly could win the seat unopposed. The Election Commission of India said that the election process would be conducted under strict Covid -19 protocol.

The press release also said that the ECI has directed the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu to depute a senior officer to ensure that the instructions regarding the containment measures of Covid 19 are totally taken into account while the election process is being rolled out.
