Political parties in TN want single-phase Urban local body polls

The Political parties in Tamil Nadu urged the State Election Commission (SEC) to conduct single-phase elections to the Urban local bodies. The 11 parties that took part in the meeting including DMK, AIADMK, Congress, and BJP wanted the commission to hold the polls in a single phase.

Tamil Nadu will go for Urban local body elections in February after a gap of six years.

A meeting of the State Election Commission (SEC), V. Palanikuamr, and the representatives of Political parties was held on Wednesday in Chennai.

The state is going for elections to 21` corporations, 138 municipalities, and 498 town panchayaths across the state.

The Tamil Nadu minister for Municipal Administration and senior leader of the DMK, K.N. Nehru told media persons that the state government had already communicated possible dates for the conduct of elections to the State Election Commission and was fully prepared for the conduct of elections to Urban local bodies.

Meanwhile, the AIADMK and its alliance partner BJP urged the State election commission to draft the central paramilitary forces for the smooth conduct of the elections and for strict implementation of the law and order situation in the state.

AIADMK leader Pollachi V. Jayaraman while speaking to media persons after the meeting said,” We have urged the SEC to draft in Central paramilitary forces and to deploy them at sensitive booths for the smooth conduct of the elections. We have also requested the commission to take into account the campaign timings as it would be difficult for workers to return home after 10 pm due to the pandemic restrictions.”
