Three including mother arrested for selling toddler

Tamil Nadu police arrested three people including mother for selling an eight-month-old baby boy for a sum of Rs 1.5 lakh.

The incident occurred at Erode.

Police swung into action after the Child welfare committee member Lalitha of Royapuram filed a complaint with the Sembium police in Erode that a woman, Udaya (26) along with her husband Manikantan (32) had sold their eight-month-old son.

The Sembium police registered a case under Section 317 (Whoever being the mother or father of a child under the age of twelve years or having the care of such child, shall expose or leave such child in any place with the intention of wholly abandoning such child) of IPC with Section 81 of Juvenile Justice Act, 2015.

The police took Udaya into custody and on interrogation, she told that she had handed over the child to one Jhansi Rani alias Arathi (29) of Alandur. Arthi told the police that she had handed over the child to Kavitha of Erode.

Kavitha was arrested and she told police that her relative Saveetha (42) and husband Thangavel don’t have children and wanted a child for adoption. She said that she had handed over the child to Saveetha and her husband. Police took the child into custody who is under the custody of the child welfare committee.

The Child’s mother Udaya, the woman who stood as intermediatory, Kavitha, and one more person was arrested on Thursday night and will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Court on Friday.
