Seven Sri Lankan Tamil refugees reach Dhanushkodi, TN

Seven Sri Lankan Tamil refugees who are fleeing from the economic crisis in the island nation reached Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu on Friday.

The Lankan Tamils were spotted by the local people at Mandapam and alerted the Coastal Security Police who reached the spot and took them into custody.

Police said that the seven refugees comprising of women and children have reached the Indian coast in an illegal ferry. The seven will be lodged at the Mandapam refugee camp, sources in the Coastal Marine police told BPNS.

The Coastal police said that those who reached Dhanushkodi on Friday morning are from two families. Dossnavis (40), his wife Rajini (38), and their three children are from Vavuniya district. Mathiya (40) and her seven-year-old son are from Trincomalee district.

With the arrival of the seven Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, the total number of refugees who have reached Indian shores since the economic crisis emerged in the island nation has touched 90.
