Yellow alert in four districts of Kerala, IMD predicts heavy rain in state till Wednesday

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a yellow alert in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts of Kerala on Sunday.

The weather department in its forecast also said that thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph are likely to occur in one or two places of Kerala on Sunday.

IMD has warned the fishermen not to venture into the sea till further notice. With the chances of sear incursion high, those living in coastal areas are advised to move to other safer places. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) also informed the fishermen to keep their fishing vessels and mechanized boats safe in respective harbours to prevent them from drifting away into the sea.

The IMD forecast also said that the state will witness heavy rains till coming Wednesday and this is due to the low pressure area formed over the southeast Arabian sea.

The continuous rains have hit normal life in the state and 13 people lost their lives in the pre-monsoon showers in the state. 230 people are staying in relief camps due to the water logging and inundation leading to the damages to their houses.

Rains have been lashing Kerala since the past week and several houses were damaged and roads inundated leading to traffic disruptions also.

Several shops and commercial establishments in low lying areas of Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram were inundated in heavy rains during the past few days.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA)in a statement said that 15 houses in the state were fully damaged and 218 partially damaged due to heavy rains.
