TN health department probe on  doctor allowing house surgeon son to treat patients

Chennai, June 21 (BPNS)

Tamil Nadu health department has commenced a probe into a government doctor taking unauthorized absence and allowing his house surgeon son to screen patients.  The incident occurred at Kavundapadi Government Hospital, Erode district of Tamil Nadu  on June 19th, and the doctor is placed under suspension.

Joint director of Tamil Nadu Health Services, Dr. G.S. Gomathi issued suspension orders to Dr. T. Dhinakar, Chief Civil Surgeon under suspension.

The health department has commenced probe on charges that Dr. Dhinakar’s son, Ashwin who has completed MBBS but is undergoing house surgeoncy at Bhavani Government Hospital treated patients. A complaint to this effect was received from a person, Murugesan of Kavundapadi who reached the hospital on June 19th for stomach pain and was given medicines by Ashwin. The patient and his family came to understand from other patients and their bystanders that Dr. Dhinakar was on leave and that his son Ashwin was treating patients.

On the basis of the complaint from Murugesan, the health department conducted a probe with the patients and their bystanders and other hospital staff including paramedics, nurses, and doctors. The Joint Director found that Dr. Dhinakaran was on unauthorized absence and allowed his son Ashwin to treat doctors.

Tamil Nadu health department has constituted a special team for probing whether such incidents are taking place in other government hospitals in the state.
