Chennai, April 13(BPNS)

The Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission has issued notice to Coimbatore city police commissioner over a police official assaulting  people at an eatery including the staff as well as customers.

It may be recalled that Kattur (Coimbatore) Sub Inspector, S Muthu had assaulted customers and employees of the restaurant charging that the Gandhinagar eatery was open even after the permitted time. While the incident occurred at 10.20 pm on April 11 ,Sunday the permitted time according to Covid 19 protocol is 11 pm with 50 percent of the occupancy.

The State Human Rights Commission has now served the notice to Coimbatore City police commissioner, S Davidson Devasirvatham.

Raghuram Muthuvel, a customer at the eatery in Gandhinagar while speaking to BPNS said, “The police officer was hurling abuses at us even as we were with family and he assaulted customers who were at the restaurant and the employees were also not spared. It is to be seen that it was only 10.20 pm which was much earlier than the permitted time at the eateries which was 11pm. This was rampant hooliganism and women and children were shocked to see such a treatment from an officer who was supposed to protect people.”

The AIADMK government has drawn lot of flak over the Tamil Nadu police excesses and the lockup murder of the father, son duo of  Jayaraj and Bennicks who  were tortured to death in a police station at Thoothukudi on June 9 was a classic example of this police highhandedness. Tamil Nadu police has also earned notoriety for its behavior towards those accused of crime and is one of the worst states with police excess in large numbers.
