Kerala is set to witness widespread rainfall over the next five days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting an active southwest monsoon and issuing Yellow Alerts for several districts until Tuesday.
The IMD has warned of isolated heavy rainfall, with precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period in the affected areas. The weather system is expected to bring persistent showers across large parts of the state, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain alert.
For Friday, Yellow Alerts have been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. On Saturday, the alert will continue for Kannur and Kasaragod, while Sunday’s warning covers Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
The weather situation is expected to intensify further on Monday, when Yellow Alerts will be in effect for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod. On Tuesday, the alert will extend to Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod.
The IMD has urged people living in low-lying and vulnerable areas to remain vigilant, particularly in regions susceptible to waterlogging, flash floods and landslides. Local authorities have been asked to closely monitor the evolving weather conditions and take precautionary measures wherever necessary to minimise risks.
Despite the wet weather, the IMD has clarified that there are no restrictions on fishing along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts on Friday, as sea conditions in these coastal waters remain favourable for fishing activities.
However, the department has issued a separate marine weather warning for other parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Strong winds of 50 to 60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, are likely over parts of the central and southwestern Arabian Sea. Winds of 45 to 55 kmph, with gusts reaching 65 kmph, are expected over adjoining waters off the Gujarat and Maharashtra coasts, as well as near Oman and Somalia.
Similar strong winds and rough sea conditions are also forecast over parts of the Bay of Bengal, particularly off the West Bengal and northern Odisha coasts. The IMD has advised fishermen and those venturing into the sea in these regions to remain cautious and follow the latest official advisories.
With the southwest monsoon expected to remain active over Kerala in the coming days, authorities have urged the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and strictly adhere to safety advisories as heavy rain continues across the state.
