Tamil Nadu government is to bring in new legislation to ban online games with stakes. The new move comes after the first bench of the Madras High court comprising Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy struck down the law banning online games on Tuesday.
Tamil Nadu law minister, S. Raghupathy in a statement on Wednesday said that new legislation will be enacted soon and added that the new law would have adequate safeguards indicating appropriate reasons for banning online gaming with stakes.
The minister said that the previous AIADMK government on November 21, 2020 had enacted legislation to ban online games in a haste. He said that the then Opposition leader M.K. Stalin had urged the AIADMK government that online gaming should be banned including rummy.
The first bench of Madras High court on Tuesday had in its order striking down the legislation banning online games including rummy had stated that there were no sufficient reasons to ban online games. The court also held that the amendment of the legislation was invalid.—
