Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin on Friday visited the excavation sites and interacted with officials including the Archeological Survey of India officials. The Government of Tamil Nadu is building a museum at Keeladi at a cost of Rs 12. 21 crores in a two-acre campus and the artefacts unearthed from the excavation would be on display in the museum.
Officials of the Archeological Survey of India presented a PowerPoint presentation to the Chief Minister on the Keeladi excavations and the volume of excavations done so far.
Stalin was accompanied by Tamil Nadu ministers, K. R.Periakaruppan, Thangam Thenarasu, K.K.S.S.R Ramachandran, Raja Kannappan and
P. Moorthy.
It may be noted that excavations from Keeladi after Beta analysis at Florida in the USA are from the period between the 6th century BCE and 1st century CE. In the recent excavations at the Keeladi site, included brick structures, terracotta ring wells, fallen roofing with tiles, golden ornaments, terracotta chess pieces, ear ornaments, figurines, black and redware, and even beads made of glass, terracotta, and semi-precious stones.
Chief Minister later paid homage to the CPM leader N. Nanmaran who was also a two-term MLA at the CPM office in Madurai city who passed away at the Government Rajaji hospital on Thursday.
Stalin had earlier in the day arrived in Madurai in a scheduled airline and was accorded a rousing welcome at the airport. Several ministers including state finance minister PTR Thiagarajan were present at the airport to welcome the Chief Minister.
