With the indirect elections to the post of Mayor taking place on March 4th, the tussle for the coveted posts is on in Madurai. The seat is reserved for women and senior DMK leaders have thrown their weight behind the candidates.
The DMK led alliance had won 80 of 100 seats in Madurai and the seat is reserved for women (general category). The DMK alone captured 67 seats, INC got 5 , CPIM 4, MDMK secured 3 seats, and VCK secured 1 seat. AIADMK won in 15 seats while BJP won in one seat.
Four women candidates are in the fray for Mayor candidate in the DMK with all of them getting support from the DMK heavyweights. The contenders are Rohini Bomma Thevan, Vijaya Moushumi Sethuramalingam, Vasuki Sasikumar, and Indrani Pon Vasanth are getting support from either taxes minister, E.V. Velu, or Finance minister PTR Thiagarajan.
Former minister and senior leader of DMK, Pon Muthuramalingam has thrown his weight behind his daughter-in-law, Vijaya Moushami. Sources in DMK told IANS that the former minister is trying to convince the Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin for the coveted post.
Rohini Bomma Thevan and Vasuki Sasikumar are wives of close aides of state taxes minister, E.V. Velu while Indrani Pon Vasanth’s family is close to powerful finance minister PTR Thiagarajan.
DMK sources told IANS that the chances of Indrani getting the nod are higher as PTR Thiagarajan is enjoying a special rapport with the Chief Minister given his performance as the finance minister.
With intense lobbying taking place, focus has shifted to Chennai, and aides of all the four Mayor aspirants for Madurai corporation are intensely lobbying to get the coveted post.
