“True healthcare lies not just in treating disease, but in ensuring it never occurs,” says Abey George, General Secretary of the Swasthi Foundation, articulating a transformative vision that is steadily reshaping the approach to cancer care in Kerala. Under his leadership, the foundation has emerged as a pioneering force in preventive oncology, placing strong emphasis on early detection, awareness, and accessibility—well before the need for complex treatments arises.
At a time when escalating treatment costs and late-stage diagnoses continue to place immense strain on families, the Swasthi Foundation has positioned itself as a vital support system for thousands. Its guiding philosophy is clear and compelling: no individual should be denied timely diagnosis or life-saving care due to financial limitations. By prioritising prevention and early intervention, the organisation seeks to significantly reduce both the human suffering and economic burden associated with cancer.
A cornerstone of this mission is ‘Snehathaalam’, one of the largest breast cancer screening initiatives in the world. Through state-of-the-art mobile mammography units, the programme has reached lakhs of women across Kerala, including those in remote and underserved regions. By offering free screening services such as mammograms, Pap smear tests, and blood investigations, the initiative has made early detection accessible to vulnerable populations who would otherwise lack such opportunities.
Complementing this effort is the ‘Soukhya’ programme, which ensures that individuals identified with potential symptoms are seamlessly guided through the next stages of diagnosis and treatment. The foundation not only facilitates access to expert medical care but also extends financial assistance to economically disadvantaged patients, including children battling cancer, ensuring continuity of care without financial distress.
Swasthi’s commitment extends beyond diagnosis and treatment into palliative care, where it provides essential medical equipment such as wheelchairs and water beds free of cost. This holistic model underscores the organisation’s dedication to preserving dignity and quality of life at every stage of illness.
Founded in 2013, the Swasthi Foundation has evolved into a major humanitarian movement grounded in compassion and community service. Its initiatives span healthcare, hunger alleviation, and environmental sustainability, reflecting a broader vision of inclusive social well-being.
Building on this strong foundation, the organisation recently hosted the world’s first Preventive Oncology Summit, bringing together global experts to focus exclusively on cancer prevention and early detection. The summit marked a paradigm shift in the global oncology discourse, reinforcing the urgent need to move beyond treatment-centric models and embrace proactive healthcare strategies.
By seamlessly integrating technology, medical expertise, and compassion, Abey George and the Swasthi Foundation are setting new benchmarks in public health—working towards a future where cancer is no longer feared, but effectively prevented.
