- June 8, 2026

Chennai, June 8

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will formally inaugurate the ‘Singappenn’ Special Task Force, a dedicated police unit created to strengthen the safety and protection of women and children across the state, on Tuesday.

The launch ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. at the Jawaharlal Nehru Rajarathinam Sports Stadium in Chennai, marking the operational rollout of one of the key law-and-order initiatives announced by the Vijay government soon after assuming office.

The specialised force has been established to provide a focused and coordinated response to crimes against women and children while enhancing preventive policing and victim support services. Officials said the unit will work closely with district police authorities to ensure quicker intervention in emergencies and more effective handling of cases involving women and children.

Senior IPS officer K. Bhavaneeswari has been appointed as the first Inspector General of the Singappenn Special Task Force. The unit comprises more than 30 police personnel, including a Superintendent of Police, two Deputy Superintendents of Police, four Inspectors and several other officers and staff members.

To provide the force with a distinct identity, the government has introduced a specially designed uniform. Women police personnel and women Sub-Inspectors attached to the task force will wear blue shirts paired with khaki trousers. They will also be equipped with black caps and black shoes, making the unit easily identifiable during field operations and public interactions.

The Singappenn Task Force was originally scheduled to be launched on May 29, but the programme was postponed due to administrative reasons. With the inauguration now scheduled for Tuesday, the force is expected to begin functioning immediately thereafter.

Following the launch, Singappenn personnel will be deployed across Tamil Nadu and will operate in all districts. Apart from responding to complaints and ensuring swift intervention in emergencies, the force is expected to focus on surveillance, preventive policing, victim assistance and public awareness initiatives.

Officials said the creation of the dedicated task force reflects the government’s commitment to improving the safety and welfare of women and children. The initiative is expected to strengthen public confidence in policing and contribute to creating a safer environment across Tamil Nadu.
