Brazil, Morocco Set for High-Stakes World Cup Opener as Group C Supremacy Looms

- June 12, 2026

New Jersey, June 13:

Five-time world champions Brazil will launch their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against an ambitious Morocco side at the MetLife Stadium on Saturday in what is widely being viewed as the defining match of Group C.

With both teams expected to comfortably navigate past Haiti and Scotland in the group stage, the clash could play a decisive role in determining who finishes top of the group and secures a potentially easier path in the knockout rounds.

Brazil arrive at the tournament under the guidance of legendary Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti, who is tasked with ending the Selecao’s 24-year wait for World Cup glory. Brazil last lifted football’s most prestigious trophy in 2002 and are chasing a record-extending sixth world title.

Despite suffering several injury setbacks in the lead-up to the tournament, including concerns surrounding Neymar Jr., Brazil remain one of the strongest attacking sides in the competition. Ancelotti has embraced the country’s traditional attacking philosophy, building a squad loaded with forward talent such as Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, Endrick, Gabriel Martinelli, Matheus Cunha and Igor Thiago.

The midfield is anchored by experienced stars including Casemiro, Bruno Guimaraes, Lucas Paqueta and Ederson, while Gabriel Magalhaes and Marquinhos form a formidable central defensive partnership. However, questions remain over Brazil’s full-back positions, an area opponents could seek to exploit.

Morocco, meanwhile, enter the tournament carrying the momentum of recent successes that have transformed their status in world football. Following their historic run to the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup and an African Cup of Nations triumph, the Atlas Lions are once again regarded as dangerous outsiders.

New head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, who guided Morocco’s Under-20 team to the FIFA U-20 World Cup title in 2025, has inherited a side packed with experience and quality. Achraf Hakimi, Brahim Diaz, Sofyan Amrabat and goalkeeper Yassine Bounou remain central figures in a squad known for its tactical discipline and resilience.

Although injuries to key players Nayef Aguerd and Abde Ezzalzouli have disrupted preparations, Morocco are expected to pose a significant threat, particularly through Hakimi’s attacking runs from the right flank.

Brazil hold the advantage in World Cup meetings, having defeated Morocco 3-0 in 1998. However, Morocco claimed a 2-1 victory when the teams last met in an international friendly in 2023, adding further intrigue to what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the opening round.
