Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 12

A motivational talk on the significance of organ donation was organised at the CISF Unit, LPSC Valiamala today.

The session was graced by Shri Ashutosh Gaur, Commandant, VSSC Thumba, and featured Rotarian Lal Goel, National President of the Rotary Club Organ Donation, as the keynote speaker.

The session aimed to spread awareness among CISF personnel and their families about the life-saving potential of organ donation. Lal Goel, a prominent advocate for organ donation, spoke in detail about the importance of cultivating a culture of giving.

He explained that despite advancements in medical science, thousands of patients die every year in India due to the shortage of donor organs.

Citing national data, he pointed out that India has one of the lowest organ donation rates in the world — about 0.5 donors per million population — compared to 35 in Spain and 26 in the United States. “Each donor can save up to eight lives through organ transplantation,” he said, highlighting the immense social impact of such altruistic acts.

The speaker also discussed the current legal framework governing organ donation in India, including the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, which regulates donation and transplantation to ensure ethical and transparent practices.

He emphasised the importance of obtaining family consent, maintaining donor registries, and combating misconceptions surrounding organ donation.

Goel further elaborated on the challenges faced by both donors and recipients — from lack of awareness and infrastructure gaps to cultural taboos that often discourage families from consenting to donation.

He urged CISF personnel to take the lead in promoting awareness within their communities.

The event drew active participation from CISF personnel of both LPSC and IIST units along with their families.

The session concluded with an interactive segment, where participants shared their views and pledged to support the cause of organ donation.
