Rich tributes were paid to legendary freedom fighter Dheeran Chinnamalai across Tamil Nadu on Monday, with leaders recalling his valiant resistance against British rule and his supreme sacrifice in the fight against colonial domination.
Remembering the freedom fighter on his death anniversary, leaders hailed Chinnamalai as a fearless warrior who challenged the growing influence of the British East India Company in southern India and stood firmly against its taxation policies and attempts to establish political control.
In messages paying homage, they said Chinnamalai’s courage, patriotism, self-confidence and spirit of sacrifice continued to inspire generations. His decision to confront a powerful colonial administration despite overwhelming odds reflected his commitment to protecting the rights and freedom of his people.
Leaders also recalled the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters who placed the interests of the country above their own lives and said the freedom enjoyed by present generations was the result of their struggle and sacrifice.
Born as Theerthagiri in the Kongu region of present-day Tamil Nadu, Dheeran Chinnamalai emerged as one of the prominent early figures in the resistance against British expansion in southern India.
He mobilised forces against the East India Company and fought several battles against British troops. His opposition to colonial taxation and British attempts to consolidate their authority made him an important figure in Tamil Nadu’s history of resistance.
Chinnamalai was eventually captured by the British and executed at Sankagiri in 1805. Over the years, he has come to be remembered as a symbol of courage and resistance, particularly in the western districts of Tamil Nadu, where his legacy remains deeply rooted.
His death anniversary is commemorated every year, with political leaders, organisations and members of the public paying homage and recalling his contribution to India’s struggle against British rule.
