Kerala is expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placing four northern districts under a yellow alert and warning of strong winds and rough sea conditions along the coast.
Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad and Kozhikode are under yellow alert, indicating the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. Strong surface winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph are also likely in parts of the state.
The continuing wet spell is being influenced by a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha region. Rainfall activity is expected to persist over Kerala until August 12.
With adverse weather conditions prevailing over the Arabian Sea, fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts on Sunday.
The IMD said winds could reach speeds of 40 to 50 kmph and occasionally touch 60 kmph along the Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts, accompanied by rough sea conditions.
A separate Kallakkadal warning has also been issued for parts of the Kerala and Tamil Nadu coasts due to the possibility of high waves and coastal inundation.
The warning covers the coastal stretches from Kappil to Pozhiyoor in Thiruvananthapuram, Alappad to Edava in Kollam, Chellanam to Azhikkal Jetty in Alappuzha and Attupuram to Kodungallur in Thrissur.
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has forecast waves of 1.2 to 1.8 metres along these areas until 5.30 pm on August 10.
The Kanyakumari coast is also likely to experience waves of 1.7 to 1.8 metres until 2.30 pm on August 10.
Fishermen and coastal residents have been advised to exercise caution, particularly in areas vulnerable to sea erosion and coastal flooding, and to stay away from dangerous stretches of the shoreline.
