Malappuram, Sept 7
A 38-year-old migrant worker has been arrested for allegedly killing his roommate by assaulting him and pushing him through an open window of a four-storey building near Edavannappara in Malappuram district.
The arrested man was identified as Sunil Kiro, a native of Jharkhand. The victim, Prakash, 47, was also from Jharkhand. Both men were daily-wage labourers and lived in the same building at Edasserikadavu.
Prakash was found dead on the ground outside the building on Sunday. Although his death was initially treated as suspicious, a police investigation indicated that he had been murdered following a dispute with Sunil.
According to investigators, tension had developed between the two men after Prakash reportedly informed Sunil’s wife that her husband was involved in an extramarital relationship. Police believe Sunil became resentful towards Prakash over the disclosure.
The dispute escalated into a heated argument around midnight on Saturday. During the confrontation, Sunil allegedly attacked Prakash and repeatedly struck his head against a wall. Prakash lost consciousness after suffering serious injuries in the assault.
Police said Sunil then allegedly pushed the unconscious man through an unprotected window on an upper floor of the building. The window reportedly had no protective grille. Prakash fell to the ground and died from the injuries sustained in the fall.
The circumstances surrounding the death prompted police to question those staying in the building and reconstruct the events preceding the incident. Evidence gathered during the inquiry reportedly pointed to Sunil’s involvement.
A team headed by Vazhakkad Circle Inspector Haridas conducted the investigation and identified Sunil as the suspect. He was taken into custody on Monday and formally arrested in connection with the killing.
Police are continuing the investigation to establish the complete sequence of events and determine whether anyone else had knowledge of or involvement in the crime.
