Chennai , Aug 24 The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has arrested a couple in Chennai after allegedly recovering three kilograms of hashish intended for smuggling to Sri Lanka.
The seized narcotic substance is estimated to be worth ₹75 lakh. The accused were identified as Sivagamisundari and her husband, Gurumurthy.
Acting on intelligence about the movement of the consignment, officers of the NCB’s Chennai Zonal Unit intercepted the couple near the Porur toll plaza earlier this week. A search allegedly led to the recovery of the hashish. Preliminary inquiries indicated that the drugs were to be transported to Sri Lanka, the agency said.
The NCB described the seizure as significant because of Sivagamisundari’s association with Angoda Lokka, a Sri Lankan gangster linked to organised crime and international drug trafficking.
Sivagamisundari had earlier been arrested by the Tamil Nadu Police’s Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department in a case registered in 2020. The investigation concerned the fabrication of identity documents and supporting records that enabled Angoda Lokka to live illegally in India.
Lokka had reportedly stayed in Coimbatore under a false identity before his death in 2020. His death and suspected criminal activities in Tamil Nadu prompted a CBCID investigation into people believed to have assisted him.
NCB investigators are now working to establish the source of the seized hashish and identify the intended recipients in Sri Lanka. They are also examining whether a wider transnational network was involved in procuring and transporting the consignment.
The Chennai unit has seized about 2,916.4 kg of ganja, 77.7 kg of hashish oil, 13 kg of hashish, 1.8 kg of amphetamine and 2,799 LSD blots since the beginning of 2026. It has arrested 48 people in narcotics cases during this period. The agency estimated the value of the drugs seized this year at around ₹27.80 crore.
