Chennai, August 17
The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will take up department-wise demands for grants for the 2026-27 financial year today as the House reconvenes following a four-day break.
The sitting will begin at 9.30 a.m. Legislators will scrutinise departmental allocations, examine the implementation of government programmes and seek new projects for their constituencies.
On the first day, the House will consider demands relating to Health and Family Welfare, Revenue and Disaster Management, and Natural Calamities Mitigation.
Issues concerning government hospitals, medical education, the availability of doctors, public welfare schemes, revenue administration and disaster-response mechanisms are expected to figure prominently in the proceedings.
Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Minister Dr K.K. Arunraj and Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan will respond to the debate. Both ministers are expected to address concerns raised by legislators and announce new schemes and policy initiatives.
The department-wise debate follows the conclusion of the broader discussion on the State Budget and Agriculture Budget presented by the newly elected TDP government.
The general Budget for 2026-27 was tabled on August 5, followed by the Agriculture Budget on August 6. Members of the ruling party and the Opposition participated in the combined debate on August 7, 10 and 11.
During the discussion, legislators raised questions about the State’s finances, development priorities, welfare commitments and challenges facing agriculture and other sectors.
Finance Minister Maria Wilson and Agriculture Minister Vinod responded to the debate on August 12. The Assembly was subsequently adjourned for four days in connection with the Independence Day celebrations.
The grant-demand proceedings will allow members to seek explanations regarding expenditure, highlight shortcomings in the implementation of government schemes and press for constituency-level development works.
The government will also use the debate to outline its plans for individual departments. Grant demands relating to the remaining departments will be taken up during subsequent sittings.
