Chennai, Sept. 6:
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Sunday saluted police personnel, praising their courage, sacrifice and commitment to protecting the public and maintaining law and order.
In his Police Day message, Vijay said the occasion marked the enactment of the Madras District Police Act in 1859, which laid the foundation for a modern and organised policing system in the region.
The Chief Minister said the responsibilities of police officers went far beyond preventing crime and enforcing the law. They routinely worked in difficult and dangerous conditions, placing their safety at risk to protect people’s lives, property and rights, he said.
Police personnel also played a crucial role during emergencies, disasters and other hazardous situations, often serving on the front lines when communities were most vulnerable. Their bravery and sacrifices deserved lasting recognition and gratitude from society, Vijay added.
Extending his wishes to every member of the force, Vijay said their dedicated service was essential to preserving social peace and firmly upholding the rule of law. He also acknowledged the heavy workload and professional pressure faced by officers while carrying out demanding duties.
The Chief Minister assured the force that his government would give priority to reducing this burden. Steps would also be taken to strengthen policing capabilities by providing modern technology and improved facilities, enabling personnel to respond more effectively to emerging crimes and changing public-safety challenges.
Alongside professional modernisation, the government would expand welfare measures for police personnel and their families, Vijay said. He described welfare support, manageable workloads and better technology as central to improving officers’ efficiency, morale and confidence.
Concluding his message, Vijay thanked police personnel for their steadfast service in normal times and crises. Their contribution, he said, remained indispensable to public order, citizens’ security and the protection of fundamental rights across Tamil Nadu.
