- June 12, 2026

Chennai, June 12:

A Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary has been booked by police after a woman working at a women’s fitness centre in Alandur accused him of harassment and intimidation. The accused, Vembuli, who served as the Alandur North TVK area secretary, is currently absconding, police said.

According to the complaint filed with the St Thomas Mount police, the woman alleged that Vembuli repeatedly harassed her and pressured her to comply with his demands, claiming that her continued employment at the fitness centre depended on it. She alleged that he misused his influence and position to intimidate her and create an atmosphere of fear.

The complainant further stated that Vembuli frequently visited her residence during late hours, causing her mental distress and anxiety. Following the alleged incidents, she approached the police seeking action against him.

Based on the complaint, the St Thomas Mount police registered a case under provisions of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and launched an investigation. Police officials said statements are being recorded and further inquiries are under way.

The allegations also triggered swift disciplinary action within the ruling party. Chennai Suburban TVK district secretary Saravanan announced that Vembuli had been removed from all party posts, including his primary membership, stating that his conduct had brought disrepute to the party.

Police said efforts are under way to trace the accused, who has remained untraceable since the case was registered. Further legal action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.

The incident has once again brought focus on allegations of harassment involving political functionaries, with both the police and party leadership acting promptly following the complaint.
